Slimserver beats mserv

Ok, looks like it's time to get rid of mserv... I went pretend shopping today and looked at the Squeezebox and that will have to be my next purchase. Too slick.

And then I noticed that the Slimserver package is not only Free Software it also supports streaming to winamp, xmms, etc. Which means I can actually listen to my mp3's at work. Or on my laptop... or on the stereo... or in the bedroom...

It also is far better than mserv at parsing ID3 tags. Pretty slick software. Only real annoying thing is the latency (since winamp and xmms buffer things) when switching tracks, but that's probably tunable in the clients to make them use a smaller buffer.

The addition of 'album art' and such makes it do one of the things I wanted to hack into mserv at some point, and that it doesn't get whiney about having >200 tracks by the same artist is a huge bonus.

Only sucky thing is that it doesn't have the same 'ratings' thing that mserv has, but it does accept plugins, and there are a couple plugins that imply they do something similar, so it's technically possible. Time to look at the code and figure out how to do that.

Next big toy purchase will be a Squeezebox2.
